Microsoft and Nvidia unveil Surface Laptop Ultra, an RTX Spark-powered PC built to run advanced AI agents locally.
Microsoft and Nvidia are unveiling a new premium Windows PC built around Nvidia’s RTX Spark platform, with a major focus on running AI agents directly on the device.
The Surface Laptop Ultra represents a deeper collaboration between the two companies and a broader push to move more AI workloads from cloud data centres onto personal computers. Reuters
Nvidia says RTX Spark can deliver up to 1 petaflop of AI performance and support up to 128GB of unified memory, giving PCs enough capacity to run large AI models and agentic workloads locally. NVIDIA Investor Relations
That matters for Microsoft because many AI workloads currently depend on Azure infrastructure. Running more coding, creative and enterprise tasks on customer-owned devices could reduce cloud dependence while improving speed, privacy and offline capability.
For Nvidia, the platform opens a new route into the Windows PC market, which has traditionally been dominated by Intel and AMD.
The opportunity comes with a cost challenge. Reuters reports that rising memory prices are pushing high-end AI PCs well above traditional premium-laptop pricing, potentially limiting early adoption to developers, enterprises and power users. Reuters
Security will also be critical. Nvidia and Microsoft have already highlighted sandboxing and new Windows security controls designed to keep autonomous agents contained while they operate locally. NVIDIA Investor Relations
The bigger shift is architectural: AI PCs are moving from assistants that call the cloud toward machines capable of running agents, models and complex workflows themselves.
For Microsoft and Nvidia, Surface Laptop Ultra is a test of whether local AI can become the next major PC upgrade cycle.
