Meta’s Muse Tops ChatGPT as AI Agents Head for Checkout

Meta’s Muse has reached the top of Apple’s U.S. App Store rankings, passing ChatGPT shortly after launch and putting consumer AI agents into sharper focus.

The rise matters because Muse is not positioned as a traditional chatbot. It is designed to take tasks from instruction to completion, including shopping, booking travel, drafting emails, filling forms and making purchases with user approval.

Checkout Becomes the Real Test

Meta says Muse can keep working after a user closes the app and return when it needs approval for actions such as sending an email or completing a purchase.

Payments are a core part of the experience. Muse uses Link by Stripe at checkout, allowing users to approve purchases while keeping real card details hidden from the agent and merchant. Stripe says Link can also issue a one-time virtual card scoped to an approved purchase.

That makes checkout a critical battleground for agentic commerce. A chatbot can recommend a product, but an agent must be able to buy it safely, with clear limits, user approval and fraud controls.

Early tests suggest the experience is promising but still uneven. Muse can search, compare and prepare transactions, but shopping can be slow and some retailers may restrict agent access.

Trust remains the bigger hurdle. Personal agents need access to inboxes, accounts, calendars, payment methods and shopping histories to be useful. That creates a new privacy and permission problem for consumers and platforms.

The broader signal is clear: AI assistants are moving from answering questions to taking action.

If agents can become faster, safer and more trusted, checkout may become the point where chatbots stop and commerce agents begin.
