Microsoft is offering voluntary buyouts to about 60,000 employees as the company continues one of the technology industry’s largest AI infrastructure investment programs.
The Voluntary Exit Offer applies to eligible employees in participating teams across the U.S., Canada, U.K. and India. Microsoft had around 223,000 full-time employees as of June 2026.
The program covers employees at level 70 and below in selected organizations, including AI experiences, Copilot, finance, HR, Xbox and Windows + Devices.
Microsoft says the offer is voluntary and designed to help teams adapt to changing business needs.
Eligible employees will receive financial support, continued stock vesting for a fixed period, healthcare coverage and career-transition services.
The move comes as Microsoft maintains plans for approximately $175 billion in calendar-year 2026 capital expenditure, driven largely by datacenters, servers and AI infrastructure.
Microsoft has also reduced headcount through earlier voluntary programs and layoffs, while continuing to expand capacity for Azure and AI services.
The overlap between workforce restructuring and record infrastructure spending is increasing scrutiny over how major technology companies balance AI investment with operating costs.
