Google Rolls Out New AI Safety Tools to Block Scams

Beginning with the Pixel 9, Google integrates the Gemini Nano on-device AI model inside Pixel smartphones, where it does real-time call analysis. Without ever submitting audio to Google, the technology detects dubious calls by listening to conversational patterns of typical fraud.

On the device, all call analysis takes place locally. No call is uploaded to Google’s computers, recorded, or transcribed. This gives you strong scam protection without compromising the privacy of your voice.

The AI sounds a beep during the call and displays a warning on the screen when it recognizes scam-like activity. If something seems strange, you can choose to disconnect right away due to this alert.

By default, scam detection is disabled. To prevent trusted contacts from being incorrectly marked, users can manually activate it, and it only functions for calls from unsaved (unknown) numbers.

Google alerts you with a banner if you launch sensitive financial apps like Google Pay, Paytm, or Navi while on the phone with an unknown individual. With just one swipe, you can disconnect the call and halt screen sharing, lowering the danger of real-time fraud.

Beyond phone calls, Google employs Gemini Nano in Chrome and Search to identify phishing, spammy websites, and scammy alerts.

Google uses collaborations with finance companies, SIM-based phone verification (ePNV) to replace SMS OTPs, and user education to increase fraud awareness, particularly in high-risk regions, in addition to AI call detection.
