DHS has ordered federal civilian agencies to remove DeepSeek products and certain third-party services over data security and cybersecurity concerns.
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has ordered federal civilian agencies to remove DeepSeek products and certain third-party services built using the Chinese AI model from government IT systems.
The order also prevents affected agencies from acquiring DeepSeek products, affiliated services, or certain third-party implementations in future procurements.
DHS says DeepSeek presents multiple security risks, including the possibility that sensitive information entered by government employees or contractors could be transferred to China.
The department also warned that use of the models could generate intelligence about U.S. persons or government programs and that DeepSeek software may contain malware or other vulnerabilities.
The action expands earlier restrictions already adopted by agencies including the Commerce Department and Navy, as well as several U.S. states.
A separate DHS memo issued in July also instructed agencies to monitor network traffic involving DeepSeek-related services.
